When Michele Munarin from the DMK Tribe Milano team invited me to speak at their event, I had no doubts. DMK Tribe is an international community with over 6,000 active members across marketers, creatives and entrepreneurs, present in Lisbon, Barcelona, Cascais and Milan. The kind of audience that faces the same challenges as my clients every day: getting noticed, being remembered, getting concrete results from their online presence.
The topic of my talk? “The power of color in personal branding: how to build a memorable color identity”. A subject I touch every day in my work with freelancers and SMEs (gabrielelakhal.com/en/services/attachment/servizi-di-comunicazione-2/), and one that deserved a direct take, without the usual clichés.
Colour is not an aesthetic choice, it is a strategic one
There is a recurring problem in the branding world. Too many professionals build their visual identity following simplified, outdated rules: “blue conveys trust”, “red is energy”, “green is nature”. The truth is that this logic does not work.
During the talk I explained why. Neuroscience tells us that colour perception is not universal. Each person links colours to specific personal experiences, memories and emotions. So choosing a palette “because everyone does it” puts you in the worst position: looking the same as everyone else.
I brought a different approach to the stage, grounded in science and personalisation. The same method I apply with my clients, the RAH Colour Method, which starts from individual perceptual analysis to build a colour identity that is authentic and aligned with business goals.
What the people in the room took away
The talk was not a theory lecture. I built the session to give participants concrete tools they can apply to their personal brand right away.
We analysed real rebranding cases together, comparing before and after. We ran live perception tests to show how subjective colour associations are and how risky it is to rely on generic charts. And I shared a practical method to build a palette that reflects who you are and what you want to communicate, without giving up readability, accessibility and function.
Because a brand that works is not a pretty brand. It is an effective one. A brand that gets recognised, remembered and chosen.
What colour has to do with your business goals
If you work as a freelancer or run an SME, colour is one of the most underrated parts of your communication. Yet it is the first filter your audience perceives you through, before they even read your name or understand what you do.
Choosing the right colours does not mean following a trend. It means building a visual system that strengthens your positioning, sets you apart from competitors and communicates your value at a glance.
It is the same logic I apply in my work as a Design Strategist: combining brand strategy, user-centred design, colour psychology and funnel marketing to turn your visibility into measurable results.
